Biography
Born in July 1924 in the village of Gruzskoye, Krivorozhsky District, Dnepropetrovsk Region, in a peasant family. Ukrainian. After graduation, he worked on a collective farm.
He was drafted into the Red Army by the Dolinsky district military enlistment office in 1944. At the front in World War II from March 1944.
The shooter of the 6th rifle company of the 1050th rifle regiment, Red Army soldier Vladimir Shkapenko, among the first on January 15, 1945, crossed the Pilitsa River near the village of Palchev, located southwest of the Polish city of Varca.
Being the leader of the 6th rifle company, Vladimir Shkapenko, despite the deadly artillery and machine gun fire of the enemy, was the first to run through the thin ice of Pilitsa. A decisive throw burst into an enemy trench, where in hand-to-hand combat he destroyed two enemy machine gunners and captured a machine gun.
With a fire from a captured machine gun, the Red Army man Shkapenko mowed down about two dozen opponents with machine-gun fire, covering the crossing of the river with the 6th rifle company and ensuring its capture of the bridgehead on the left bank of the river.
He died on February 6, 1945 during the crossing of the Oder River northwest of the city of Kustrin .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 27, 1945, for the courage and heroism shown in offensive battles and during the crossing of the Pilitsa River, Red Army soldier Shkapenko Vladimir Efimovich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
He was awarded the Order of Lenin , a medal.
