Biography

Born November 27, 1923 in the village of Chernobay, now an urban-type settlement of the Chernobaevsky district of the Cherkasy region . Ukrainian. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1949. He graduated from a seven-year school in Chernobay, entered the school of factory apprenticeship at the Novokramatorsky Machine-Building Plant named after V.I. Lenin. He worked as a turner.

In the Red Army since December 1943. In the army since October 1944. Was injured.

The first baptism of fire Ivan Shmyg received near the town of Gnezdno. The company in which the younger sergeant Shmyg served, bypassing the lake, took the enemy into the ring. For the courage shown in this battle, Shmyg was awarded the Order of the Red Star .

The commander of the 990th Infantry Regiment, Junior Sergeant Shmyg, distinguished himself during the Berlin operation.

At the end of April 1945, he, along with the squad, crossed the Spree river, silently took off the sentry guarding the bridge over the river, and burst into the enemy trench. In hand-to-hand combat and grenades, the calculation of an anti-tank gun was destroyed. On the move, wires to the explosives located on the bridge piers were broken. The enemy attempted to recapture lost ground. The battle lasted twelve hours. During this time, the main forces of the division crossed the bridge. For courage and bravery shown in this battle, Ivan Nikolaevich Shmyg was awarded the second order of the Red Star .

On April 30, 1945, opponents built a bunker in a street battle in Berlin at the intersection of Alt-Jakobstrasse and Orlanienstrasse. The entire space in front of the twenty meter bunker was completely smooth and shot through. But Shmyg found a way out of the situation. At his request, the sappers blew up one surviving wall opposite the destroyed house. The collapsed wall lay right up to the bunker. After dark, the youngest sergeant approached the bunker and threw grenades at him, destroying the enemy machine gun with a servant. Then, with his squad, he burst into the building of the imperial printing house occupied by the Nazis, and in hand-to-hand combat destroyed four enemy soldiers. The department blocked the doors to the ground floor room and the basement and took up defense. On the orders of Junior Sergeant Shmyg, a breach was made in the floor. There were many opponents in the basement. During the battle, over fifty opponents were destroyed by grenades, and thirty soldiers and officers surrendered. The squad seized the stronghold of the enemy, enabling other units of the regiment to advance significantly.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, for courage, bravery and heroism, Junior Sergeant Shmyg Ivan Nikolayevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .

After the war, the foreman Shmyg was demobilized. He lived and worked in the urban-type settlement Chernobay. He died on August 19, 1984.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin , two orders of the Red Star , and medals.
