Biography
Born March 10, 1925 in the village of Pasiceli, Balti district, Odessa region of the Ukrainian SSR . Ukrainian. Member of the CPSU since 1957. He graduated from 7 classes. From August 1941 to March 1944 he was in the temporarily occupied territory.
In April 1944, after the liberation of the village, he was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the 780th Infantry Regiment of the 214th Infantry Division . He graduated from the regimental school of junior commanders. In the army since July 1944. As part of the 27th Guards Rifle Corps of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, he participated in the Iasi-Chisinau Operation. In September of that year, the 214th Infantry Division as part of the 52nd Army was transferred to Poland and became part of the 1st Ukrainian Front.
In January 1945, conducting an offensive from the Sandomierz bridgehead during the Sandomierz-Silesian operation, she liberated a number of settlements in Poland and, after a five hundred kilometer advance, reached the Oder River near the city of Breslau on 25 January.
On the night of January 26, sergeant Chumak was one of the first at hand to cross the Oder in the area of the settlement of Zedlitz, 5 kilometers north of the city of Olau. His unit immediately entered the battle and seized an important position. When counterattacking the superior forces of the enemy, Chumak replaced the out-of-order machine gunner and destroyed 17 soldiers and two enemy officers, thereby ensuring the retention of his positions.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for sergeant, courage and heroism, Sergeant Chumak Pavel Ivanovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal . Later P.I. Chumak participated in the Lower Silesian, Berlin and Prague operations.
After the war he continued to serve in the army. In 1948 he graduated from the Kiev Tank Technical School. Since 1968, Major Chumak is in stock. He lived in Chisinau. He worked as a mechanic at a tractor factory. He died on June 5, 1997. He was buried at the Central Cemetery in Chisinau.
He was awarded the orders of Lenin , World War 1 degree, medals.
