At dawn on January 28, 1944, two squadrons of the 115th cavalry regiment crossed the Styr River in the vicinity of the village of Kozlinichi and captured a dominant height of 193.0. Fifty Soviet soldiers with two 45-mm guns and four anti-tank missiles repelled several counterattacks by the Nazis.

In these battles, the machine gunners Khakimov and Ershov distinguished themselves. The enemy tanks broke into our positions several times, but without the support of their infantry, cut off by machine gunners, they suffered losses and rolled back. During the fifth counterattack, 2 heavy tiger tanks moved to a height, supported by 14 light tanks. They fired concentrated on the position of machine-gun calculation. The shells and charges for the PTR ended, and there was nothing to stop the tanks.

In this critical situation, the Red Army soldier Ershov, tied up with grenades, rushed under the tracks of the approaching “tiger”. Khakimov followed his example, throwing himself with grenades under the second "tiger". The remaining tanks turned back. At the cost of their lives, they saved their comrades and contributed to the retention of the bridgehead. The main forces of the 8th Guards Cavalry Division began crossing the river.
