Biography

Born September 20, 1915 in the village of Borkovets, now Svechinsky district of the Kirov region , in a peasant family. He graduated from grade 4. He worked as a line supervisor of the Shabalinsky regional communications center.

In October 1940 he was drafted into the Red Army by the Shabalinskiy district military enlistment office. The civilian specialty determined the military - he became a signalman. Since September 1941, he participated in the battles of the Great Patriotic War . Two months later he earned the first military award - the medal "For Military Merit" . In November 1941, as a senior telegraph operator in a communications platoon of the 541st rifle battalion of the 136th rifle division, junior sergeant Totmyanin participated in battles in the Rostov Region . Provided uninterrupted communication, timely eliminated malfunctions on the line, went on the attack with fighters. He was presented for the medal “For Courage” , but the status of the award was changed. Obviously, he did not manage to get this medal. In December 1941 he was seriously wounded, and after the hospital he fought in another part.

Participated in the defense of Stalingrad. In June 1943 he was again wounded. At the end of 1943, he fought in the 52nd Guards Separate Reconnaissance Company of the 51st Guards Rifle Division, was the squad leader. In early December, held a successful capture of the "language", was awarded the Order of the Red Star . In January 1944, in the next reconnaissance, he was seriously wounded, despite this, he was able to deliver valuable information to the headquarters. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner . After recovery, he returned to his company. He was especially distinguished when crossing the Western Dvina River.

On the night of June 25, 1944, Guard Sergeant Totmyanin with a group of scouts crossed the Zapadnaya Dvina River near the village of Malye Shchetki, Shumilinsky District, Vitebsk Region of Belarus, and in a stubborn battle captured the line. For eight hours, four scouts fought an unequal battle, repelling four counterattacks. The goal was achieved: the fighters diverted attention, pulled considerable enemy forces, which allowed the division to cross to the right bank in another place with minimal losses.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 22, 1944, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism of the guard shown, Junior Sergeant Totmyanin Dmitry Filippovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .

The hero did not manage to find out about the high award. Two days earlier, on July 20, 1944, returning from a combat mission, he came across an enemy ambush near the Lithuanian village of Turmantas and died in battle. He was buried in a military cemetery in the village of Turmantas.

He was awarded the Orders of Lenin , Red Banner , Red Star , medals "For Military Merit" and "For the Defense of Stalingrad." The name of the Hero is on the streets in urban-type settlements such as Candle , Leninskoe . His name is immortalized on a monument in the village of Yuma. The feat of D.F. Totmyanin was dedicated to his lines by the famous poet Alexei Surkov.
