Biography
He was born in 1920 in the village of Raigorod now in the Kamensky district of Cherkasy region . Ukrainian. After graduating from a seven-year school, he worked as a wagon acceptor at the Shevchenko station. During the period of temporary occupation of the area by the German-enemy invaders, he took part in the partisan movement.

The reconnaissance officer of the 857th Infantry Regiment of the 294th Infantry Division of the 52nd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, the Red Army Chekal, after crossing the Southern Bug River with a group of scouts, made his way to the enemy rear. But the group was prematurely identified. The Nazis decided to capture the scouts alive. The group was forced to join the battle. As the senior of the group, Chekal ordered the scouts to withdraw, and he took a favorable position with a machine gun. Opponents could not stand the scout’s aimed fire and retreated, having lost 25 people killed. The group returned to the location of the regiment with valuable information about the enemy.
March 21, 1944 Chekal with a group of six soldiers entered the village of Tsaregrad, where the enemy cavalry regiment was located. Sneaking up to the headquarters dugout, Chekal removed the sentry, burst into the dugout, shot two officers, and the third colonel, captured. When leaving the village, the enemy attacked the scouts. Chekal sent a group with a captured colonel to his positions, and he remained to cover his comrades. With fire from a machine gun, he destroyed several opponents. When the cartridges ran out, he fought off with a knife, but he himself died in this battle.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944 for courage, bravery and heroism, the Red Army Chekal Kuzma Fomich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin .
He was buried in a mass grave in the city of Drochia. His name is given to a street in the village of Raigorod, where his name is carved on the obelisk of Glory.
