Blumenfeld, Sigismund Mikhailovich

Sigismund Mikhailovich Blumenfeld (1852, Odessa - 1920, Petrograd) - Russian composer, singer, pianist and music teacher, brother of Felix Mikhailovich Blumenfeld .

On the advice of P.I. Tchaikovsky, he entered the Moscow Conservatory , studied with J. Galvani (vocals) and E. Langer (piano). Then he lived and worked in St. Petersburg, where he became close friends with N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and A. K. Glazunov , and became famous as an accompanist. Both Blumenfelds were highly appreciated by V.V. Stasov , who wrote that “Sigismund <...> sings almost like Felix plays” [1] In 1906, the 35th anniversary of his musical activity was celebrated in St. Petersburg, admirers led by Stasov brought him the last congratulatory address . In the years 1918-1920 he was the keeper of the museum. M.I. Glinka at the Petrograd Conservatory .

Creativity and Works

His first romances were published in 1871. In total, he wrote over 60 romances.

In addition to romances, he published small piano pieces and two pieces for cello. He also owns some arrangements. Published an article “The New (Natural) System of Gustav Neuhaus” (RMG, 1910, No. 3). [2]
