Biography
Vasily Skatkov was born in 1918 in the village of Nadezhdinka (now Tokarevsky district of the Tambov region ). After graduating from junior high school he worked on a collective farm . In August 1941, Skatkov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War [1] .
By February 1945, Senior Sergeant Vasily Skatkov commanded the division of the 58th Engineer-Battalion of the 62nd Engineer-Combat Brigade of the 6th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On February 7–8, 1945, the Skatkova branch, despite the ice drift, laid the piers of the bridge over the Oder in the area of the Leibusdorf [2] south of Steinau . The supports were repeatedly demolished by ice, but the sappers managed to cope with the task assigned to them [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated April 10, 1945, Senior Sergeant Vasily Skatkov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union [1] .
In May 1945, Skatkov went missing [1] .
He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , Red Banner , Red Star and Glory of the 3rd degree, a number of medals [1] .
