Almost nothing is known about the life of Dionysius before being elected bishop. He was probably of Greek origin. It is known that before his election he was a friend of Emperor Constantius II (337–361). The bishopric of Dionysius fell on the period of the Arian disputes between supporters and opponents of the adoption of decisions of the First Council of Nicene 325. In these disputes, the emperor supported the semi-Arians denying the cathedral, while Dionysius belonged to the Orthodox party.
In 355, at the request of Pope Liberius , a cathedral was held in the Milan . The leadership of the Cathedral of Constantius was entrusted to the students by Arius Ursakii and Valent . At the opening of the Cathedral, Dionysius proposed to sign to all those present a pre-prepared text of the Nicene Creed , Valent was indignant, a scandal broke out that was stopped by the imperial guard. Sessions of the Cathedral were transferred to the imperial palace.
At subsequent meetings of the Council, the emperor was secretly behind the curtain. When Athanasius of Alexandria , the leader of the defenders of the Nicene creed, was subjected to far-fetched political accusations and the western party of his defenders was outraged by the actions of the chairman of the Council, the emperor came out and, threatening the bishops with a sword, shouted: “ My will is the canon for you .” Further meetings of the council became an act of political will: Athanasius was condemned, the Arians won. Athanasius of Alexandria, as well as his supporters Eusebius of Vercellius , Lucifer of Kalaritan and Dionysius of Milan, were sent into exile. An envoy was sent to the pope with a demand to sign the deed of the Council, but the pope demanded a legal trial of Athanasius, to which the emperor threatened him with a link and gave him three days to think. The pope refused and was exiled to Thrace , to the city of Verria .
After the expulsion of Dionysius to Caesarea of Cappadocia, the Arian Auxentius was elected in his place. It is believed that Dionysius died between about 360 and 362. According to a possibly unreliable, historical tradition, the relics of Dionysius were transferred to Milan by Bishop Ambrose in 375 or 376. Reliably known about the remains of Dionysius in Milan since 744. The temple built in honor of Dionysius near the was destroyed in 1549. Then it was rebuilt nearby and finally demolished in 1783 to make way for new parks. The remains of Dionysius were transferred to the Cathedral of Milan in 1532.
Three parishes in Lombardy are named in honor of St. Dionysius: in Milan , in Premana and in Albavilla (Carcano di Albavilla).
