Biography
Nikolai Sitnikov was born on September 16, 1925 in the village of Tyutchevo (now Lebedyansky District, Lipetsk Region ). After graduating from seven grades of the school, he worked on a collective farm and studied at a vocational school. In January 1943, Sitnikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1944, he graduated from the Vladivostok Infantry School . Since January 1945 - on the fronts of World War II, he commanded a platoon of machine gunners of the 54th Guards Tank Brigade of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of the Oder [1] .
On January 23, 1945, under massive German fire, a Sitnikov platoon crossed the Oder south of Oppeln and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, destroying about 100 enemy soldiers and officers and capturing 4 of its machine guns. In just one day, the platoon repelled thirteen German counterattacks. In those battles, Sitnikov personally destroyed 18 enemy soldiers and officers, but he also died. He was buried in the village of Groshovets in the city of Opole [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for the “courage and heroism shown during the forcing of the Oder”, the guard, Lieutenant Nikolay Sitnikov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
Memory
Streets in Terbuny and Lebedyan are named in honor of Sitnikov [1] .
