Biography
Grigory Sitnik was born on March 30, 1916 in the village of Novokorsunskaya (now Timashevsky district of the Krasnodar Territory ). After graduating from junior high school he worked on a collective farm . In 1937 - 1941 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In June 1941, Sitnik was again drafted into the army. Since October of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In 1942 he graduated from junior lieutenant courses [1] .
By September 1943, Lieutenant Grigory Sitnik commanded a mortar platoon of the 667th Infantry Regiment of the 218th Infantry Division of the 47th Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On September 24, 1943, Sitnik’s platoon was one of the first to cross the Dnieper in the Sushki village of the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, repelling a large number of German counterattacks and holding out until the main forces crossed [ 1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944, for “courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Dnieper,” Lieutenant Grigory Sitnik was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 1961 [1] .
After the war, Sitnik continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1945, he graduated from the Shot courses. In 1960, in the rank of Major, Sitnik was sacked. He lived and worked in Krasnodar . He died on October 5, 1988 [1] .
He was also awarded two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, two orders of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
