U.S. Roman Son Criminal Case

The son from his first marriage, Roman, born in 1984, graduated from the Far Eastern Federal University with a degree in Trade Economics. The father claims that after the terrorist attack in April 2011 in Marrakesh, Roman became disabled. [5]

In March 2011, in the Western District of Washington, Roman Seleznev was charged in absentia with hacker intrusions into retail store checkout systems throughout the United States from October 2009 to February 2011. [6] On July 5, 2014, Roman Seleznev was detained at an airport in Male city in the Maldives by agents of US intelligence on charges of computer fraud, hacking , hacking bank accounts and stealing personal data of credit card holders and damaging US citizens and organizations in the amount of about 2 million dollars [7] . After that, Roman was transferred to a prison on the American island of Guam , and then to the United States .

Father, Valery Seleznev, regarded the detention of his son in the Maldives as an abduction and appealed for support to the Russian Foreign Ministry [8] [9] . The Maldives law enforcement authorities, however, rejected the accusations of the Russian Foreign Ministry about the abduction of Roman: the detention was carried out within the law - in accordance with the “red notice” of Interpol and with his assistance [10] .

Seattle , Washington, DC, a federal district court , charged Roman with hacking and breaking retail outlets across the United States in 2009-2011. According to the prosecution, he used malware to manage the servers and sites of international card forums to facilitate the theft and sale of stolen credit card information. According to the investigation, 1.7 million credit card numbers were found on the hard drive of Seleznev Jr.'s laptop, and more than $ 18 million received as a result of illegal operations on his bank accounts. With these funds, in particular, two apartments in Bali were purchased with a total value of 800 thousand dollars [4] [7] [11] .

On August 25, 2016, a Seattle district jury found Roman Seleznev guilty of hacking computer systems of various companies in the United States and stealing information about 1.7 million credit card numbers with subsequent sale via the Internet for a total of $ 170 million. The jury found Seleznev's proven guilt in 38 of the 40 episodes of the criminal case. Of these, 10 relate to cyber fraud and nine to unauthorized access to computer networks. [12] [13] On April 21, 2017, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. [14] The court refused to take into account Seleznev's confession. The judge explained that the confession made after the jury verdict “did not meet the expectations of the court” [15] .

Federal Attorney Anetta Hayes stated in connection with the sentencing [16] :

Today is a bad day for hackers around the world. The days when the Internet was like the Wild West are gone.
