Ekk, Vladimir Egorovich

Vladimir Egorovich Ekk ( February 22 ( March 6 ) 1818 - January 21 ( February 2 ) 1875 ) - Emeritus Professor of the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy , MD, one of the first researchers of viral diseases. Privy Councilor (1871).

Biography

Born February 22, 1818 in St. Petersburg , Vladimir's father was a native of the German city of Bayreuth , a famous theologian who moved to St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 19th century. Mother V.E. Ekka was first married to a jeweler, but after his death she married a second time.

Parents wanted to give their son a home education, but his mother died in 1831 from cholera , and a year later his father died of typhoid . He had an older brother who served in the medical department. Vladimir Ekk decided to follow in his brother's footsteps and become a physician, he began to prepare for admission to the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy . Brother Ekka invited several teachers to him. Studying hard, Ekk was well prepared by the age of 15, and passed the test for the right to be enrolled in free- listeners .

At the academy, he met N.F. Zdekauer , settled down to live with him in the same apartment, and later married his sister.

He graduated from the Ekk Academy in 1838 with a gold medal, his name was written on a marble plaque at the academy, and he was appointed regimental doctor. Then Eck was appointed as a resident in the clinic of the Academy, where he was preparing a doctoral dissertation. He also worked as a tutor of botany . Since 1845, he was a supernumerary doctor at the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Institute [1] .

Ekk's research topic was internal medicine. In 1845, Eck wrote the first essay "On the current state of diagnosis," in 1846 he defended his thesis "On pneumonia" for the degree of doctor of medicine. After writing his dissertation, he stopped studying botany and was sent abroad at the expense of the treasury to improve medical knowledge. Abroad, he studied theoretical and practical medicine in clinics of Vienna, Paris and Berlin. In 1848, Eck returned to the academy and for more than 25 years was an ordinary professor in the department of special therapy, for the last 9 years of his life he headed the department of the clinic of the academy.

In 1866, Eck fell ill with typhus, while infecting one of his patients, the disease was severe, but Eck survived. For the treatment of complications, Professor E. E. Eichwald was invited, who recommended cessation of work and rest. During this period, Ekka's wife died, and soon, after his second marriage, and the eldest daughter. Eck died of progressive paralysis . He was buried at the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery in St. Petersburg [2] .
