Biography
Evan Stewart was born in Glasgow. He is the son of a Scottish folk singer Andy Stewart (1933-1993). Mother - Sheila Stewart lives in Arbroath , Scotland. He was educated at Edinburgh Chifton Hall School and Merchiston Castle School, studied from 1966 to 1974. In 1975 he moved to London and began playing in the theater, most often in dramas .
Evan Stewart first appeared on television in an advertisement for the Scottish matches of Bluebell, and he made his film debut in 1979 in the film "No Change on the Western Front" with Richard Thomas and Ernest Bognain.
When Andy, the father of Evan, died in 1993 at the age of 59, after ten complex operations on the stomach, he said:
I have always loved my father very much, and I still love him. When you get older, you notice more details about your parents from a different perspective. My father loved to perform on stage, but he also loved his family.
Stewart is best known for his role in the film "Titanic" (1997), directed by James Cameron, where he played the first officer, William Murdoch. In 2005, Evan was one of many European actors who auditioned for the role of James Bond [1] .
Married to English actress Claire Biam Shaw. They have two children - Thomas and Eleonora.
Growth Stuart 1 meter 78 centimeters.
Significant film roles
No Change on the Western Front
In the film " On the Western Front Without Change " (1979) directed by Delbert Mann, Evan played the young German soldier Detering. Stewart appears in the film from the very first minutes, where it is said that Detering is a peasant, a farmer who loves his wife more than anything, a piece of his own land and horses. It is with the horses that a bright episode is associated with Evan in this film, when, during the next bombardment, Detering, seeing the injured horses, tries to shoot them so that they do not suffer. But after the ban of the commander, he leaves this venture and, with tears in his eyes, says that it is not fair to take horses for war, because they are not at fault. At the end of the film it says that Detering deserted, he was caught and shot. But the main character, like the author of the novel Erich Remarque himself, justifies his deed, since he understands that the man has returned home to harvest. This was the first significant appearance of Evan Stewart on television.
The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover
Another significant appearance of Evan Stewart took place in 1988 in the film by director Peter Grinevey " Cook, the thief, his wife and her lover ." Here he played Harris - one of the assistants of the main villain Albert Speak, but over time, the negative character goes on a good side. The first manifestations of such a metamorphosis were when Spica mocked a child. In this episode, Harris crouched and covered his face with his hands, symbolizing despair and compassion. After the murder of Michael, the lover of the main character Georgina, he finally becomes a positive hero. Being on the good side, he stands up for the cook, after which one of Speke's toadies smears Harris's jacket with cake, demonstrating the irrelevance of his "betrayal."
Fools are lucky
In 1989, Evan starred in a short episode in the popular British TV series " Fools Lucky ." And although his appearance in the frame lasts no longer than five minutes, Evan still considers this role to be the most significant in his career. Here he played a young doctor, Robbie Medous, who examines the protagonist of the television series, as well as his good friend, and calls him a connoisseur of spices, because he complains of a stomach ache. Here is what the actor himself said about it [2] :
Many people recognize me from the episode in the TV series “Fools Lucky” more often than from any other role, this is incredible. I still constantly receive letters from fans. People even quote the words that I said, although I had a role for a couple of minutes. I can’t even remember what the scene was about and what words I said. I am proud to be part of something so outstanding and bright.
Titanic
Evan Stewart is perhaps best known precisely for his role as William Murdoch in the 1997 Titanic film directed by James Cameron . The actor’s first appearance in the film is when William Murdoch is standing on the bridge with Captain Edward John Smith. The captain gives the command "full speed ahead." Murdoch, giving the appropriate indication of the hold, returns back to the captain, and informs him about the speed of 21 knots. The next appearance of the actor occurs already shortly before the collision of the ship with the iceberg. Seeing a pair of lovers, Jack Dawson and Rose Bukeyter, William smiles and turns away, and after a few seconds, the sentinel from the Mars square saw an iceberg. William Murdoch accepts attempts to dodge the ice mountain, but to no avail. Immediately after the collision, he closes the waterproof doors and reports to the captain. The next time Evan appears in the episode, when Thomas Andrews informs the crew that the Titanic is doomed. William answers the question of captain Edward Smith about the number of passengers on board the ship. Then he appears several times in scenes of ship flooding, for example when he takes a bribe from Caledon or looks at Joseph Ismey when he sneaked onto a lifeboat. Just before the flooding of the boat deck, Murdoch refuses to bribe. He tries to restrain the advancing crowd and in a panic shoots two men. Unable to bear the feelings of guilt, Murdoch salutes the dying ship and shoots himself in the head. The last appearance of Evan Stewart takes place in the final episode, when the old Rose dreams of all those killed on that fateful night. William Murdoch stands next to Thomas Andrews [3] .
Many people, historians and witnesses to the disaster believe that William Murdoch was unfairly portrayed in the film as a negative character (among them was Scott Murdoch - the officer's nephew). Although Evan was sympathetic to Scott, he still defended the film, saying:
I understand all the objections, but I consider them unfair. Many people said that Murdoch was a coward in the film. I do not think so. I never felt that Murdoch was shown in a bad light. James Cameron constantly discussed with me how Murdoch saved countless lives.
Young Adam
In 2003, a David Mackenzie film was released under the title Young Adam . Evan Stewart played Daniel Gordon, who first appears in the film only on the front pages of newspapers, as the main defendant in the murder of his mistress. Later, the actor appears in court scenes, where his character is ultimately found guilty, despite the fact that he did not kill anyone, and sentenced to death by hanging.
Last chance
In 2004, Evan Stewart starred in one of the main roles in the British comedy film "Last Chance" ( eng. One Last Chance ), in which he played the little mad father of the protagonist. The film was not very popular outside the UK.
