The early years

Jerry Steiner was born on January 7, 1918 in the city of Bern ( Indiana ), studied at the same school in which he played for the local basketball team.

Student career

In 1940 he graduated from Butler University , where for three years he played for the Butler Bulldogs team, in which he spent a successful career. Under Steiner, the Bulldogs have never won either the regular championship or the tournament of the Independent conference , and they have never entered the playoffs of the US student championship [1] [2] [3] . Throughout his student career, Jerry Steiner was the leader of the Bulldogs, after which he was introduced to the sports hall of fame of Butler University, but, being in the last season among the award winners, he was not included in the NCAA All-American team [4] . In 1982, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. [5]

Professional career

He played as a point guard . In 1940, Jerry Steiner entered into an agreement with the Indianapolis Kautskis team in the National Basketball League (NBL) . He later played for the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons (NBL) team. In total, the NBL spent 2 seasons. Steiner once joined the 2nd national team of all the NBL stars ( 1946 ) [6] . In total, during his career in the NBL, Jerry played 46 games in which he scored 299 points (an average of 6.5 per game) [7] . Coaching career

The Indianapolis Kautskis team, with which Steiner signed a contract in 1940, refused to participate in the upcoming season due to financial problems, after which he decided to start a coaching career. In the same year, he entered into an agreement with the basketball team of the Abram Shortridge High School in Indianapolis , which he led for two seasons (1940-1942). During World War II, he had to interrupt his coaching career for three years (1942-1945), after which he resumed his playing career at Kautskis. After completing his professional career as a player, Jerry became the arbiter of the Big Ten conference , and then for another thirty years he worked as a physical education teacher at the above-mentioned school [4] .
