Biography

Born in the writer's family. She wrote her first work on the problems of working class unions at the age of 18. This work attracted the attention of the radical deputy , who met a young writer and eventually married her in 1855 [5] .

Began to actively engage in literary creativity since 1859 . Over the course of her life, she has written more than thirty novels [6] , which in the 19th century were rated as works with a “socialist connotation”, as well as many essays and articles. She was engaged in creativity almost to the very end of her life. The themes of her works were feminism and protest against the situation of women in modern France, anti-clericalism and criticism of the poverty of the working class [7] . In addition to the literature, she was also engaged in social activities, participating, in particular, in the campaign for resolving divorces; Largely thanks to her articles, in 1884 a law was passed allowing those who married only through registry offices to divorce [8] . She was buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Her daughter became a famous sculptor.

The main works: “Une expiation”, “Une femme hors ligne”, “Un drame électoral”, “La croisade noire” - an essay translated into many languages, withstanding several editions and confirming the fame of this writer; “Le calvaire des femmes”, “Les réprouvés”, “Les forçats du mariage”, “Chair à canon” (available in Russian translation), “Les crimes de L'amour”; "Les droits du mari" and others [9] .
