Microsoft Anti-Virus for Windows

Microsoft Anti-Virus ( born Microsoft Anti-Virus , MSAV ) - antivirus software provided by Microsoft for its own operating system MS-DOS . The program first appeared in MS-DOS 6.0 (1993 [1] ); the latest version accompanied MS-DOS 6.22. In the first version of the antivirus program, there was no built-in update mechanism (updates had to be received on BBS and manually installed by the user), it was able to recognize 1234 different viruses [2] . Microsoft Anti-Virus for Windows ( MWAV ), which was a user interface that allowed MSAV to work correctly under Windows 3.1, was also supplied in a common package.

History

Microsoft Anti-Virus was manufactured for Microsoft by Central Point Software Inc. (later, in 1994, acquired by Symantec and included in the Norton AntiVirus software product group) and was essentially the base version of Central Point Anti-Virus ( CPAV ), which, in turn, was licensed by Carmel Software Engineering ( Haifa , Israel ). Carmel Software Engineering sold the same product under the name Turbo AntiVirus , both domestically and abroad.

Microsoft Anti-Virus for Windows was also supplied by Central Point Software [3] .

Features

MSAV was a Detect and Clean strategy, able to scan the boot sector of a disk and find viruses like a Trojan horse , which corresponded to typical user needs at that time.

The program also had the ability to deal with stealth viruses ( English Anti-Stealth ) and check the checksum , which made it possible to detect any changes in existing files. This technology was designed to compensate for the lack of regular service packs. The latest MSAV update was released in June 1996 [4] , it added the ability to detect polymorphic viruses , and the virus database was also updated - the list of detected viruses was expanded to 2371.

Microsoft Anti-Virus for Windows later became known for identifying the Windows 95 installer as containing a computer virus.

VSafe Resident Program

VSafe is a MSAV resident component that provides real-time virus protection.

By default, VSafe does the following:

  • checks executable files for viruses (in the process of their work);
  • scans all disks ( hard disk and floppy ) for viruses in the boot sectors ;
  • warns of a virus attempt to write to the boot sector or partition table of the hard drive;
  • warns of formatting that may erase data from the hard drive.

Additional features of VSafe allowed:

  • warn about attempts of executable files to become resident ;
  • prohibit programs from writing to disk;
  • warn about an attempt to write to the boot sector of a diskette by a program;
  • warn about trying to modify executable files.

VSafe had a virus database inside its own executable file, and was also able to download additional signatures (updates) as an auxiliary file.
