History
On August 5, 1963, Pope Paul VI issued the bull Quotiens datur , which established the Diocese of Nachingwea, isolating it from the territorial abbey of Ndanda (today - the diocese of Mtwara ). Initially, the diocese of Nachingwea was a suffragan one in relation to the archdiocese of Dar es Salaam .
On October 17, 1986, the Diocese of Nachingwea transferred part of the territory to create the Diocese of Tunduru Masashi and at the same time changed its name to the Diocese of Lindi. It should not be confused with the earlier diocese of Lindi, from which the current archdiocese of Songea derives.
On November 18, 1987, the Diocese of Lindy became part of the church province of Songea.
