Biography

From the age of 5 he studied playing the harpsichord and piano with Ralph Gotoni and Eero Heinonen. Since 1975, he studied composition under the guidance of Einoyuhani Rautavaara . He reached the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest for young musicians ( 1984 ). After winning the Concert Audition for Young Artists in New York ( 1987 ), he gave a concert at Carnegie Hall .

Artistic director of the Korsholm Music Festival ( 1988 ), Turku Music Festival ( 1990 - 1992 ).

One of the founders and leader of the Helsinki Festival Orchestra.

Since 2003, has been the head of the Tapiola Sinfonietta chamber orchestra.

Performance

As a pianist he played with the largest orchestras in the world under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazi , Daniel Barenboim , Nikolaus Arnonkur , Kent Nagano , Kurt Mazur , Jong Myung Hoon , Pierre Boulez , Christoph Eschenbach , Esa-Pekki Salonen , Valery Gergiev and others.

He performed works by Bach , Mozart , Beethoven , Chopin , Grieg , Mussorgsky , Alkan , Janachek , Messian , Scriabin , Rachmaninov , Stravinsky , Prokofiev , Shostakovich , Hindemith , R. Shchedrin (including the piano concerto No. 5 dedicated to him).

In 2014, he performed in Russia ( Moscow , St. Petersburg , Perm ).

Rewards

He was awarded the highest state award of Finland for artists - medal Pro Finlandia (2003).
