Biography
Born on May 20, 1921 in the village of Semenovo, Urensky District, Nizhny Novgorod Region . He graduated from the seven-year school. He worked on the collective farm, then as a baker of the Urensky leesprodtorg.
In early June 1941, he was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the Leningrad Military Engineering School. The cadet met the beginning of the Great Patriotic War , in August as part of the school was evacuated to the city of Kostroma. At the end of December 1941 he graduated from school ahead of schedule and was sent to the front.
Participated in the battles of Moscow . Then on the Leningrad front there was a breakthrough of the blockade, battles on the Karelian Isthmus, the assault on Vyborg. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1944. The officer-sapper was particularly distinguished in the battles for the liberation of Poland in the winter of 1945.
On January 15, 1945, the company of the 83rd Assault Engineering Sapper Battalion under the command of Lieutenant Smirnov, acting in the offensive zone of the rifle division, made passes in the enemy barriers. Fighting together with regimental reconnaissance, the company went out to the bridge over the Pilica river near the settlement of Buda-Mihailuvsk . In a short battle they captured a bridge and a small bridgehead on the left bank of the river. The bombers defused 60 aerial bombs and 50 anti-tank mines planted under the bridge and saved it from an explosion. The company had insignificant losses.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated February 27, 1945, for exemplary performance of combat tasks of the command and the courage and heroism shown at that time, Lieutenant Smirnov Alexander Yakovlevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .
After the Victory continued military service. With the defeat of the enemy, the war for Smirnov did not end; during the mine clearance by sappers of Smirnov, thousands of mines, unexploded bombs and shells were cleared. In 1945 he graduated from the Higher Engineering Officer School. Since 1954, Captain Smirnov - in stock.
He lived in the city of Zagorsk, Moscow region. He worked as a mechanic at an electromechanical plant. He died on January 21, 1975. He was buried at the Old Cemetery in Sergiev Posad.
