Biography

Federici grew up in Italy and came to the United States in 1967 to enter graduate school in philosophy at the University of Buffalo [5] . She taught at the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria, and was an assistant professor and later professor of political philosophy and international relations at the University of Hoftsra.

She was co-founder of the International Feminist Team, organizer of the Wages for Housework campaign, and participates in the Midnight Notes Collective. She co-founded the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa. In 1995, she became one of the founders of the Radical Philosophy Association (RPA), a project against the death penalty .

Scientific Contribution

Federici's most famous work, Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation , expands the work of Leopoldina Fortunati. In it, she disputes the idea of Karl Marx that the initial accumulation of capital is a necessary precursor to capitalism . Instead, she argues that initial accumulation is a fundamental characteristic of capitalism itself, that in order to preserve itself capitalism requires a constant infusion of expropriated capital.

Federici connects this expropriation with female unpaid labor related to social reproduction and other functions, [6] she formulates this as a historical condition for the rise of the capitalist economy based on wage labor. In this regard, it denotes the historical struggle for the public and the struggle for communism . Instead of looking at capitalism as a liberation victory over feudalism , Federici understands the rise of capitalism as a reactionary movement against rising communism, trying to maintain a social contract .

In the 1970s, Federici joined the New York Household Salary movement, initiated by Selma James .
