Biography

Born in the late 1820s, received an art education at the Imperial Academy of Arts , a course in which he graduated with the title of an artist in 1857, after which he went abroad to improve his account. Abroad, he made many beautiful drawings of the most interesting architectural monuments and when, upon returning to Russia (1859), he presented them to the Academy of Arts, the latter first expressed her gratitude to the author, and the following year gave him the title of academician of architecture. At that time he was already in the service at the court of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich and, among other architects, took part in the construction of the grand-prince's palace, after which he received a large gift as an award.

With the appointment of the Grand Duke as a Caucasian governor, Schweier was transferred by architect to the General Directorate with him and left for the Caucasus on July 7, 1863 Here he designed and built (1866) a country palace in Borjomi , and then compiled several building projects for local mineral waters. The Caucasus and its architecture greatly interested Schweyer, and he studied them for a long time and with great love, and presented the results of his impressions in an interesting article: “Description of Architectural Monuments in the Caucasus” (“Architect” 1873, No. 6).

As an architect, Schweyer was a fairly large size. With an extraordinary talent, he had a lively and bright mind and with rare art he managed in his projects to reflect the spirit of one or another indigenous architecture. Such are his projects of buildings in the Caucasus, the project of summer residences in Crimea, Prince. B. D. Golitsyn, the projects of buildings in the Russian style. And the ability of his always found himself connoisseurs among the general public, why, in parallel with his official duties, he had to perform work for individuals. Among such buildings it can be pointed to the cottage of the merchant Klemenets in the Kronstadt colony and a crypt and a chapel of Bremsky stone for Gervais at the Smolensk cemetery. Schweyer until his death was a member of the SPB. Society of Architects, where he enjoyed well-deserved authority. He died on December 8, 1874.
