Biography
Sergey Gennadievich Botalov - a famous Ural archaeologist, oriental historian, writer and publicist was born on July 2, 1958 in the village of Fedorovo, Yusvinsky District, Perm Region, candidate of historical sciences (1994), doctor of historical sciences (2003), full member of the Turkic Academy of Sciences (1999 )
He graduated from high school in the city of Kartaly, Chelyabinsk region, entered the Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical Institute (1975). As a student, going on an archaeological expedition, became interested in the unexplored period of the medieval history of the Southern Urals and Northern Kazakhstan.
Since the beginning of the 80s S.G. Botalov is the leader and organizer of numerous expeditions to identify and explore the archaeological sites of the nomadic communities of the Ural-Kazakhstan steppes, as well as monuments that fall into the canal construction zone for transferring Siberian rivers to the Aral Sea. He participated in the excavation of mounds and hillforts in the Crimea, Kherson region, Kazakhstan.
In 1987, an archaeological unit led by S.G. Botalova was openly fortified settlement of the Bronze Age - Arkaim.
Since 1994, he is a research fellow at the Institute of History and Archeology of the Cro RAS (Ekaterinburg).
In 2007, he became a professor at SUSU at the International Regional Studies course. For the first time, a scientist systematized and summarized materials from monuments of late antiquity and the Middle Ages, proposed a scheme of chronological and ethnocultural development of the steppes of the South Trans-Urals and Northern Kazakhstan.
In the 80s, after the excavation of the mounds of Druzhensky and Bolshe-Karagansky burial grounds S.G. For the first time, Botalov argued, suggested the attribution of monuments of the Late Sarmatian culture to the funerary and sacrificial memorial complexes of the early Huns, with which, first of all, Sarmatian experts did not agree. In this regard, the author prepared and published the fundamental monograph “Huns and Türks” (2009), where he summarized the materials of the 2nd – 8th centuries. from the vast territory of the Eurasian steppes - from Ordos to the Carpathian basin.
In 1996, S.G. Botalov established a discrepancy between the so-called "barrows with a mustache" or with stone ridges with burial complexes of the Tasmola culture of the early Iron Age. Having carried out full-scale archaeological research of this type of monuments (cemeteries of Gorodishchensky IX, Elizavetpolsky, Kainsay and others), the scientist dates them to the early Middle Ages and connects these monuments with the early Bulgarian population of the Ural-Kazakhstan steppes (the tribe blew in the association he ok budum [onogur “10 arrows” ]), which was formed from the post-Hun time and later entered the West Turkic Kaganate. Thus, S.G. Botalov was the first to discover and interpret the Ural-Kazakhstan monuments of the Hun and Turkic eras.
In 1990, S.G. Botalov organized and headed an archaeological research and production enterprise engaged in the study of monuments falling into the construction zone, as well as the organization and re-exposure of city and district museums in the Chelyabinsk region. The company carries out numerous archaeological security excavations in the city of Chelyabinsk.
In 2009, under the leadership of S.G. Botalova was opened Uelgi funeral complex (Kunashaksky district, Chelyabinsk region), the materials of which have received worldwide fame. Excavations of this multicultural complex of the 8th – 9th centuries allowed a new approach to the problem of cultural genesis of the Bashkirs, Hungarians, Volga and Siberian Tatars, Kypchaks, Kyrgyz and Trans-Ural Ugrians (Mansi).
S.G. Botalov is the author of over a hundred publications and five monographs. The scientist’s views on the historical fate of the ancient ethnic groups that inhabited the territory of the Urals are also reflected in the Nomady art (2000; 2017), a popular popular science book, which describes the key stages of the history of the Great Eurasian Steppe in poetic form.
S.G. Botalov is one of the authors of the concept of constructing an exposition at the Chelyabinsk Regional Museum of Local Lore and creating the museum "Peoples and Technologies of the Urals" at South Ural State University (Chelyabinsk).
