The DC-10 crash in Faro is a plane crash that occurred on Monday , December 21, 1992 . Martinair Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF airliner made a scheduled flight MP495 on the route Amsterdam - Faro , but when landing at Faro Airport with a strong wind and a few meters from the runway at an altitude of 303 meters, he suddenly pulled his nose up, lost speed and formation fell to the ground, while completely destroyed. Of the 340 people on board (327 passengers and 13 crew members), 56 were killed.

Compared to the DC-10 crash in Sioux City, the crash of flight 495 is distinguished by a large number of survivors (111 out of 296 people died on the flight United Airlines-232).

Airplane
McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF (registration number PH-MBN, serial number 46924, serial 218) was released in 1975 (the first flight was made on October 29). It is equipped with three General Electric CF6-50C turbofan engines . November 26 of the same year was transferred to Martinair , in which it received the name Anthony Ruys . From Martinair leased to airlines:
- Mandala Airlines (from October 1, 1977 to October 1, 1979),
- Singapore Airlines (from October 1, 1979 to September 1, 1981),
- Garuda Indonesia (September 1 to October 1, 1981),
- World Airways (from April 29 to June 25, 1992).
On the day of the disaster, it made 14 615 take-off and landing cycles and flew 61,543 hours [1] [2] .
Crew
The crew of flight MP495 was as follows:
- The aircraft commander (FAC) is 56-year-old H.W. van Staveren ( Dutch HW van Staveren ). A very experienced pilot, he worked at Martinair for 24 years (since January 1968). He flew the aircraft CV-640 , Airbus A310 , Douglas DC-8 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9 . As commander of McDonnell Douglas DC-10 - since March 1988 (before that he had been managing him as a co-pilot), in January 1989 he was promoted to FAC instructor DC-10. 14 441 hours flew, 1878 of them on DC-10 (1240 of them as pic).
- The co - pilot is the 31-year-old R.J.H. Klemenouff ( Dutch RJH Clemenkowff ). An experienced pilot, he joined Martinair in April 1989 as the co-pilot of DC-10. He flew the aircraft Cessna 150 and Cessna 172 . 2288 hours flew, 1787 of them on DC-10.
- Flight Engineer - 29-year-old G.W. Glans ( Dutch GW Glans ). He was originally a co-pilot with Canadian Airlines and Swissair . In September 1989, he qualified as a flight engineer, and in February 1992, he got a job at Martinair airline as a DC-10 flight engineer. 7540 hours flown, 5840 of them on the DC-10.
