Biography
Studied in Würzburg and in Rome . After spending a year as a parish priest in Zellingen , not far from his hometown, in 1850 he was sent by order of his bishop to the University of Munich , where he received a doctorate in theology the same year, becoming a private assistant professor in 1851 and in 1855 year professor of church law and history. In Munich, he gained a reputation as one of the most educated theologians regarding the issue of the infallibility of the pope, which then began to be discussed.
In 1868, he was sent to Rome to participate in organizing the beginning of the Vatican Council . He was a staunch supporter of the dogma of infallibility, and in 1870 wrote Anti-Janus , a response to the work of The Pope and the Council authored by a certain “Janus” (the authors were Dollinger and J. Friedrich), which attracted much attention at one time. In 1877, he was made a prelate of the papal court ; in 1879 he became a cardinal deacon and was subsequently appointed curator of the Vatican archives .
He was buried in the temple of the Cistercian Abbey Mererau (near the city of Bregenz , Austria).
