Biography

Born on April 3, 1920 in the city of Poti, now the Republic of Georgia . Georgian. He graduated from ameliorative technical school. He studied at the Tbilisi Agricultural Institute and the flying club.

In the Red Army since 1940. In 1943 he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad military aviation school of pilots. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1944. On the front since September 1943.

He fought on the Kursk Bulge, participated in the battle for Kiev, liberated Poland , stormed Berlin. On his Il-2 attack aircraft, he went through all the major battles of the second half of World War II .

The commander of the 175th Guards Ground Attack Aviation Guards Regiment, Lieutenant Shota Shurgay, by March 1945 made one hundred and ten successful combat missions on the Il-2 aircraft to attack enemy troops and equipment, inflicting significant damage to manpower and military equipment. And in total during the war years he made one hundred and fifty-three successful sorties. The pilot-attack aircraft met the glad tidings of the German capitulation on the outskirts of the defeated Berlin.

Guards Lieutenant Shurgaya participated in the historic Victory Parade on June 24, 1945 on Red Square in Moscow .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 15, 1946, for exemplary performance of combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown at the same time, Lieutenant Shurgai Shota Iosifovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .

After the war, Sh. I. Shurgay continued service in the Air Force. In 1955 he graduated from the Air Force Academy. Since 1957, Lieutenant Colonel Shurgaya Sh. I. - in reserve.

He lived in the capital of Georgia - the city of Tbilisi. Before leaving for a well-deserved rest, he worked as deputy director of a motor transportation company. In May 2005, the 85-year-old veteran participated as a representative of front-line soldiers from Georgia in the Parade in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Victory in Moscow . The President of Russia personally handed him a nominal watch.

He died on August 16, 2005. He was buried on August 18, 2005 with all military honors at the cemetery in the Saburtalo district of Tbilisi, near the spouse's grave.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin , two Orders of the Red Banner , Orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, two orders of the Red Star , the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree, medals.
