Biography
Born on September 1, 1918 in the village of Schnitki, now in the Senno district, Vitebsk region of Belarus, into a peasant family. Byelorussian. Education is incomplete secondary.
In the Red Army since 1938. In 1940 he graduated from the Melitopol Naval Aviation School of Navigators. Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1941.
By July 1943, the navigator of the 2nd squadron of the 4th Guards Aviation Regiment of the Guards captain Sergey Cherepnev had made two hundred and thirty-seven successful combat missions on the bombardment of important targets in the enemy’s rear lines and the concentration of his troops, causing significant damage to the enemy in manpower and military equipment.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 18, 1943, Captain Cherepnev Sergei Mikhailovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal for exemplary performance of the command's combat missions and shown courage and heroism of the guard.
He died on June 14, 1944 while performing combat missions in the area of the Polish city of Deblin, burned down in a wrecked winged car with the crew.
He was awarded two orders of Lenin , orders of the Red Banner , World War 1 degree.
In the village of Vysocany, Vitebsk region of Belarus, the name of the Hero is the school in which he studied, on the facade of which a memorial plaque is installed.
