He was a Savile professor of astronomy at the University of Oxford; explained Newton's Principia in the work Astronomiae physicae et geometriae elementa. In another essay, "Catoptricae et dioptricae sphericae elementa", indicated the possibility of arranging achromatic optical projectiles.
