Biography
He was born on March 23, 1910 in the village of Nikonovo now in the Zubtsovsky district of the Tver region . He graduated from 7 classes. He worked at one of the factories in Moscow .
In 1932 he was drafted into the Red Army . He served in aviation as a radio operator, stayed for long service. In 1937 he graduated from the military school of observer pilots. In 1938 he joined the CPSU (b). Member of the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940. In 1941 he graduated from training courses for aviation navigators.
Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He fought as part of the 24th Near Bomber Aviation Regiment. He made sorties not only for bombing and attacking manpower and equipment of the enemy. On behalf of the front commander, he flew to establish communications with the encircled units behind enemy lines. Delivered valuable information from reconnaissance missions.
During reconnaissance of the regrouping of enemy troops in the Novgorod-Seversky area, he not only delivered accurate information about the location of enemy units, but also stormed the accumulation of manpower and equipment of the enemy five times, and made a tangible upset in his columns.
By February 1942, Senior Lieutenant Tikhomirov made 95 sorties on reconnaissance and bombardment of enemy troop concentrations. He was presented for conferring the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
March 10, 1942 Senior Lieutenant Tikhomirov died while performing a combat mission.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 14, 1943, for the exemplary performance of command assignments and the courage and heroism shown in battles with German-enemy invaders, Senior Lieutenant Tikhomirov Ilya Kuzmich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Arkhangelskoye, Kamensky district, Tula region .
He was awarded the Order of Lenin , the Red Banner .
The name in the name of the Hero is the square in the village of Arkhangelskoye and the street in the city of Zubtsov, Tver Region . A memorial plaque is installed in the native village of Mashutino.
