Biography

Johann was born on December 5, 1825 in the Gottorp Palace. He was the sixth son and ninth child in the family of the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburgskogo Friedrich Wilhelm and his wife Louise Carolina of Hesse-Kasselsky . Father received this title when his wife was pregnant with Johann. The newborn received a name in honor of Hans the Younger, the son of King of Denmark Christian III and the founder of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg line of the dynasty.

Father passed away when Johann was five. Mother helped children get a good upbringing.

In 1842, Johann entered the Prussian military service. In the same year, he passed the exam for the rank of officer in Berlin and was appointed non-commissioned lieutenant in the 27th Prussian Infantry Regiment in Magdeburg .

In the years 1844-1846, the prince studied at the University of Bonn .

In 1847, he continued his military career in Berlin, joining the regiment of Prussian dragoons. For several years, Johann rose to the rank of captain of the cavalry, which he received in 1854. The following year he became a major . After that he left for Denmark, where his brother was elected crown prince.

In Denmark, from time to time, he carried out various diplomatic missions and rose to the position of Chancellor.

In March 1863, his nephew George was elected king of Greece, and in November, brother Christian took the Danish throne.

In April 1867, George went on a tour of European capitals in order to find a bride. Regent of the country, instead of himself, he left Uncle Johann. In November, the king returned with his young wife Olga Konstantinovna , née of the Grand Duchess of the Russian Empire. During this time, Regent Johann managed to fall in love with the local population. He successfully completed his mission.

The prince stubbornly became interested in history and left diaries with a lot of useful information about the politics of the Glucksburg dynasty in the 1860s .

Johann lived a bachelor and died childless in the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen on May 27, 1911. He survived all the brothers and sisters and passed away at the age of 85 during the reign of nephew Frederick VIII . The prince was buried in the vault of Christian VI in Roskilde Cathedral . There lies his brother William [1] .
