History
On the site of the modern Catholic Church of the Ascension of Christ once stood another church - Ascension of Mary, built in the Gothic style of red brick in Tilsit on Fabrikshtrasse (Iskra street) in 1843-1851.
In 1888 a tall tower was built, in 1926 the church was reconstructed. After the Second World War, the church building was partially destroyed, but the tower was preserved. The main church building was severely damaged by the 1944 bombing. Until the end of the 1950s, there was a recycling center in the church building. The church fence was used as a fence around school No. 1.
In 1960-1970. the church was actively dismantled on a brick. The tower stood until 1983, then was blown up.
In 1992, the territory of the church was transferred to the Catholic community of Sovetsk, in 1993, on the old foundation, designed by Lithuanian architects Gedeminos Yuryavichus and Stasis Yushka thanks to the enthusiasm of priest Anupras Gauronskas, who was appointed Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz in 1991 to be the head of the parish of the Resurrection of Christ as well as local Catholics, the construction of a new Catholic church building was begun.
The Church of the Ascension of Christ was solemnly consecrated on August 20, 2000.
