Biography

The Fragmentary Annals of Ireland report that Asl was the brother of the Dublin kings Olav Bely and Ivar.

According to the Irish Annals , Asl was first mentioned in 863 , when he, along with his brothers Olav and Ivar, plundered the Irish prehistoric mounds of Brú na Bóinne .

In 866, Asl joined the expedition of his brother Olav Bely to Scotland , and another brother, Ivar (Imar) , probably together with the “great army” of the Vikings fought in Mercia , East Anglia and Northumbria . The kings brothers Asl and Olav plundered the Scottish lands for Fortria , took hostages and spent the whole winter in enemy possessions.

In 867, Olav Bely one returned from Scotland to Ireland. The Annals of Ulster report that Asl, one of the three Kings of the Gentiles , was killed by his relatives. The Fragmentary Annals of Ireland state that Asl was killed by Olav Bely because of a quarrel with his wife. Olav's wife was the daughter of Kinaeda, whose origin is not precisely defined. Perhaps it was Kenneth Mac Alpin (c. 810 - 858/859 ), King of Scotland , or Kinaed Mac Coning (d. 851 ), King of Bregi.

The only son of Asl, whose name is unknown, according to the “Annals of Ulster” was killed in 883 by the son of Iergne and the daughter of Maelsehnille the poppy Mael Ruanaid . The Scots Chronicles report that the killers were Jarl Oethyr Black and Muirgel, daughter of the High King of Ireland, Maelsehnille poppy Mael Ruanaid .
