Biography
Born on December 8, 1913 in the city of Ichnia, now the Chernihiv region, in a peasant family. Ukrainian. In 1938 he graduated from the Kiev Teacher Institute. He worked as a school principal in the city of Smela, Cherkasy region .
In 1932, drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . In 1934 he was discharged. Secondarily called up in 1938. In 1939 he graduated from junior lieutenant courses, the Higher Officer Artillery School. He took part in the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940. Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1939.
In the battles of World War II since 1941. He fought on the Voronezh and 1st Ukrainian fronts.
The commander of the 504th cannon artillery regiment, Lieutenant Colonel N. S. Shulzhenko, distinguished himself in battles when capturing a bridgehead on the Oder River. On January 26, 1945, the regiment was the first of the artillery units to cross the river in the area of the Köben settlement, and participated in repelling a number of enemy counterattacks.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for the courage and heroism shown when crossing the Oder and holding the bridgehead on its western shore, Lieutenant Colonel Shulzhenko Nikolai Semenovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal .
In 1948 he graduated from the Higher Officer Staff School, in 1959 - higher academic courses at the Military Academy of the General Staff, in 1965 - the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze. He served as an assistant to the representative of the commander in chief of the combined armed forces of the states parties to the Warsaw Treaty. Since 1974, Major General of Artillery N. S. Shulzhenko - retired.
He lived in the hero city of Odessa. He died on April 17, 1980. He was buried at the 2nd Christian cemetery in Odessa.
He was awarded the Order of Lenin , four orders of the Red Banner , orders of Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 degree, Red Star , and medals.
A street in the city of Ichnia is named after the Hero. In Odessa, on the house in which N. S. Shulzhenko lived, a memorial plaque was installed.
