Biography

Born in 1918 in the village of Kondaurovo (now - Gavrilovsky district of the Tambov region ). Russian. He graduated from junior high school. Since 1937, he worked at an aircraft factory in Novosibirsk: a riveter-assembler, inspector, master foreman.

In August 1942, he was drafted into the Red Army by the Dzerzhinsky District Military Commissariat of Novosibirsk. In the battles of World War II from July 1943. He fought on the Central Front .

I.M. Cherenkov arrived in the guards regiment and began to command the foot reconnaissance unit. Since that time, sorties into the rear of the enemy, the search and capture of the “language” have become his daily work. The talent of a scout appeared with him shortly before the Battle of Kursk. Then he captured two opponents who reported valuable information about preparations for the advance of the enemy on their site. The data obtained by him always contributed to the military success of the guards regiment, in which Cherenkov served. So it was in Sumy region during the liberation of Glukhov and other settlements, so it was in the first decade of September 1943, when the regiment entered Chernigov land.

Fulfilling the order of the regiment’s command, I. M. Cherenkov was the first with his squad to appear on the right bank of the Seym River. There he established that the large enemy forces, along with military equipment, are concentrated at Bakhmach. The regiment headquarters received timely information from him about the enemy’s movement, Bakhmach was taken. While the regiment, along with other parts of the division, was clearing the city of opponents, I.M. Cherenkov with the scouts was already at the Chesnokovka stronghold created by the enemies.

To delay the advancing regiment, the opponents installed two guns on the northwestern outskirts of the village, created nine machine-gun points and strengthened the local garrison. The data set by the scouts were immediately transferred to the regiment headquarters. The headquarters ordered to continue to conduct surveillance, and when our units offensive from the front, support the attack from the rear.

Cherenkov distributed responsibilities among scouts. The machine gunner was supposed to destroy the gun crew. When the first groups of the advancing regiment showed up, at the command of I. M. Cherenkov, fire was opened at the enemy from the rear. Meanwhile, the machine gunner destroyed the enemy gun crews. The sudden shelling from the rear and the attack from the front created a panic among the Nazis. Throwing weapons and wounded, they fled. The stronghold of Chesnokovka was captured without loss.

Sergeant I. M. Cherenkov solved a lot of the enemy "puzzles" of the guard. During the twelve days of fighting in the Chernihiv region, he and his scouts, while raiding the headquarters of enemy units, captured three more “languages” and about a thousand secret documents. On the twentieth of September, when the guardsmen of the regiment crossed the Desna, the scouts, together with their commander, were already fifty kilometers from the front edge in the vicinity of the village of Old Glybov. Gathering intelligence, I.M. Cherenkov simultaneously examined the left bank of the Dnieper and determined the most advantageous places for boosting. At the same time, he looked after the moorings on the right bank, and established the enemy firing points.

Exactly at midnight on September 21, 1943, the airborne groups of the regiment began forcing the Dnieper in the area of the village of Domantovo, the Chernobyl district of the Kiev region . The first boat to sail was I.M. Cherenkov with scouts, followed by the rest of the guards. Cherenkov confidently led them to the landing sites, carefully studied on the days of observation. As soon as the boat buried ashore, he exclaimed, “Forward. After me. ”The first burst into the enemy’s trench and began to shoot enemies from the machine gun.

The unexpected appearance of Soviet soldiers on the right bank, which the opponents considered impregnable, stunned them. Suffering heavy losses and throwing weapons in a panic, they fled to the second line of defense. During the battle for the front line of defense, I.M. Cherenkov personally destroyed fifteen enemy soldiers and one officer. A fierce battle began for the second line of the Dnieper fortifications of the enemy. During this battle, Sergeant Ivan Maksimovich Cherenkov was killed by the guard at the second line of trenches in hand-to-hand combat. He was buried in the village of Kosachivka, Kozeletsky district, Chernihiv region of Ukraine .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 16, 1943, for the courage and heroism shown when crossing the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on its right bank of the guard, Sergeant Ivan Maksimovich Cherenkov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .

He was awarded the Order of Lenin , medals "For Courage", "For Military Merit." A street in Novosibirsk is named after the Hero.
