History
The Museum "Icon House" was opened on September 18, 2009 [1] in a mansion at 4 Spiridonovka at the initiative of collector Igor Vozyakov [4] . The museum’s collection was based on its extensive collection of paintings and icons, among which were bought from an unknown owner for allegedly $ 20 million [4] [5] and personal relics of Emperor Nicholas II [5] returned from Holland : banners with images of the “ Kazan Mother of God ” and “ Of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky ”, created at the beginning of the XX century [5] [6] . Previously, the icons made up the decoration of Theodore Cathedral in Tsarskoye Selo , closed in the 1930s, after which they were probably sold abroad through the All-Union organization "Antiques" [1] [5] [6] .
Initially, the museum was called the "Icon House". He became the second in Russia after the Private Museum of the Russian Icon of Mikhail Abramov, a private collection of icons that was constantly open to the public [2] . In 2012, the museum changed its name to "The House of Icon and Painting named after S. P. Ryabushinsky." One of the issues of the Russian Icon magazine in 1914 reported [7] that the owner of the mansion on Malaya Nikitskaya , entrepreneur and philanthropist Stepan Pavlovich Ryabushinsky plans to open an icon museum in his house. War and revolution prevented Ryabushinsky from opening a museum - in 1917 he emigrated to Italy, from where he never returned. His collection of icons has been nationalized and divided between state museums. In 2012, the great-grandson of Stepan Ryabushinsky, Stefano Ryjoff, who lives in the Italian commune of Mujo , agreed to use the name of his great-grandfather in the name of the new museum [7] .
Collection
The collection of icons includes works of the 15th - beginning of the 20th century. The collection contains the works of various icon-painting centers of Russia and famous art workshops, signature images with the names of masters. Among the works of old masters of Italy, Spain and Flanders, art historians distinguish several works [1] .
The image "The Holy Family with the Baby John the Baptist", performed around 1516-1517 by the Italian artist Sebastiano del Piombo . The canvas “Madonna and Child” of the 1630s by artists Gerard Zegers and Jan Brueghel the Younger is a repetition of the plot of the painting by Rubens and his workshop [1] .
Among the works of the XVII-XVIII centuries, the collection is dominated by icons created on the territory of the Russian North - Obonezhye , Kargopol , Pomerania , the Northern Dvina basin ( Veliky Ustyug , Arkhangelsk ) [1] .
The painting "The Holy Family with the Baby John the Baptist." Around 1516-1517. Italy. Sebastiano del Piombo .
Icon "St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker (Court)". The first third of the XVIII century, Novgorod.
Icon "St. Nicholas the Wonderworker." The end of the XVI century, Vologda.
Fayumsky portrait of an unknown. The end of II - the beginning of the IV century.
Another group of icons is a painting of the Volga region, mainly Yaroslavl and Kostroma lands. The art of the leading icon-painting cooperatives working in this region in the third quarter of the 17th century is adjoined by the image “Saint John Chrysostom , with the Trinity of the New Testament and 15 hallmarks of life”, including a detailed life cycle from Christmas to the burial of the saint [1] .
Art historians mark the icon "St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Dvorishchensky), with the upcoming noble princes Mstislav and Anna Novgorod and 12 hallmarks of the Tale" of the first quarter of the XVIII century. Images with such a detailed cycle illustrating the Legend of finding the miraculous icon - the main shrine of the St. Nicholas and Dvorishchensky Cathedral in Novgorod , were still not known [1] .
Projects and Exhibitions
The museum is experimenting with unusual formats: from involving famous actors and public figures in the exhibition (the “House Icon of Stars” exhibition) [8] [9] [10] to arranging expositions for blind and visually impaired visitors , when all exhibits, including a relief icon XVII century "Virgin of Vladimir ", visitors could touch, and materials for exhibits were duplicated in Braille [11] [12] [13] .
