Biography

Nikolai Sigaev was born in 1921 in the village of Gadaley (now - Tulunsky district of Irkutsk region ). After graduating from the Tulun Teachers' Institute, he worked as a specialist in a rural school. In September 1941, Sigaev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1942, he graduated from the Omsk Infantry School. Since May of that year - on the fronts of World War II [1] .

By September 1943, Captain Nikolai Sigaev commanded the 3rd battalion of the 109th Rifle Regiment of the 74th Rifle Division of the 13th Army of the Central Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Chernihiv region of the Ukrainian SSR . On September 11, 1943, Sigaev’s battalion crossed the Desna River and seized a bridgehead on its shore. In the course of the subsequent offensive, he liberated the village of Obolonye in the Korop district and held the defense for two days until the main forces arrived. September 14, 1943 Sigaev died in battle. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Korop, Chernihiv region of Ukraine [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 16, 1943 for "courage and heroism shown in crossing the Desna and keeping the bridgehead on its right bank," captain Nikolai Sigaev was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the orders of Lenin and World War II 1st and 2nd degrees [1] .

In honor of Sigaev, a street and a school are named, a bust is installed in Tulun [1] .
