Biography
The son of the famous synagogue cantor Mayer Schor - since 1893 the chief cantor of the Polish synagogue "Beth Israel" on Leopoldgasse, 29, in Vienna . [1] His grandfather Abraham Shor was also a cantor.
He studied in Brno and Vienna with Adolf Robinson. He made his debut on the opera stage in Graz , performed on it in 1912-1916. Then he worked in Prague (1916-1918), Cologne (1918-1923), Berlin (1923-1931). He also performed in Covent Garden (1924-1931), the Metropolitan Opera (1924-1943) and the Bayreuth Festival (1925-1933).
In 1931 he emigrated to the United States. Leaving the stage after 1943, he worked as a director, continued to give concerts, and gave private vocal lessons.
It is considered the greatest Wagnerian bass-baritone of his generation (sometimes throughout the 20th century), primarily as a performer of the parts of Wotan / Wanderer (The Ring of the Nibelung ) and Hans Sachs (The Nuremberg Mastersingers ). At various times, his partners in the scene were prominent Wagnerian singers - Frida Leider , Lotta Lehman , Elizabeth Retberg , Lauritz Melchior , Kirsten Flagstad , Helen Traubel and others.
