Museum building
The Girona Museum of Art reflects the evolution and contemporary reality of the art of Girona. The museum is located in one of the most famous buildings of the old quarter - in the Episcopal Palace (Palacio Episcopal).
For the first time about this palace is mentioned in the X century . It is assumed that the building belonged to Count Borrell (Borrell), who by the end of the century became the legal successor of the Bishop of Girona.
The building, which now houses the museum, was rebuilt and restored a significant number of times. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Throne Hall (Salón de trono), the facade towers and prison rooms were added to the main building. It was they who gave the building a look of fortification.
The style of the building, which from the XVI century has been preserved to our times, dates back to the Renaissance. In the Renaissance style , the coat of arms of the main facade, the entrances of the main facade and the courtyard are made. In the 17th century, a side wing was built, and in the 18th century, a new chapel was built and Romanesque arches were transferred from the inner gallery to the facade.
