Lawrence County is located in the United States , Illinois . Officially established in 1821 . As of 2010 , the population was 16,883 people. Got its name in honor of the American naval officer James Lawrence who died in the Anglo-American war .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 969 km², of which 964 km² are land and 5 km² or 0.52% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 15,452 residents comprising 6,309 households and 4,252 families . The population density is 16.00 people per km 2 . In the district there are 7,014 residential buildings, with a building density of about 7.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 97.97%, African - Americans - 0.76%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.14%, Asians - 0.12%, Hawaiians - 0.00%, representatives of other races - 0.27 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.74%. Hispanics accounted for 0.89% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 28.70% are children under the age of 18, 54.90% of households are married couples living together, 9.00% of households are single women without a spouse, 32.60% of households households are not related to families , 29.20% of households consist of one person, 15.00% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.36 people and the average family size is 2.89 people.
