The palace was built in 1829-1832 for the corps marshal Georg von Wangenheim according to the project of the court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves . In 1844, the building acquired a conservatory. King George V , who ascended the throne in 1851, bought the building under his palace-residence and lived in it for about 10 years. In 1862, the city authorities purchased a building, which after reconstruction turned into a town hall and performed these functions until 1913, before the city authorities moved to the New Town Hall building opposite.

During World War II in 1943, the Wangenheim Palace was damaged by bombing. The building completely burned out, but was restored a few years later and was used for urban needs. Since 1957, the palace houses the Ministry of Economics of Lower Saxony .
