She began to actively engage in rowing in early childhood, she was a member of the local team of the voluntary sports society “ Labor Reserves ”. She achieved her first serious success in 1969, when she immediately won two gold medals of the All-Union Championship, at a half-kilometer distance among single kayaks and among doubles.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, she became a member of the national team and won the right to defend the country's honor at the European Championships in Moscow - she took first place in all three women's disciplines: singles, deuces and fours. For this achievement, according to the results of the season, she was recognized by journalists as the best athlete of the year in Belarus (along with fencer Elena Novikova and wrestler Alexander Medved ), and was awarded the honorary title “ Honored Master of Sports of the USSR ”. A year later, with a double crew, she defended the All-Union championship title and went to the World Cup in Copenhagen, where she took silver with a two and gold with a four.
In 1971, she married rower Alexander Popov, also a member of the USSR national team, and since then has acted under the name Popov. This season, she won a bronze medal at the world championship in Yugoslav Belgrade. A year later, at the championship of the Soviet Union, she was the best among four-seater crews and in the relay race 4 × 500 m. She represented the country at the World Championships in the Finnish city of Tampere, their crew, which also included kayakers Lyudmila Pinaeva , Nina Gopova and Larisa Kabakova , beat all rivals and finished first. Soon after these competitions, Tamara Popova decided to end the career of an athlete and switched to coaching.
