The Origin of a Legend

The book “Traditions and Legends of the Urals” (Sverdlovsk, 1991) contains a large number of oral narratives about the wintering of Yermak Timofeevich in the Perm Territory [2] . According to legend, Ermak , returning from Siberia , settled for some time in the Kama River basin. Before further advancement deeper into the Moscow kingdom, Ermak’s army hid most of the Siberian gold and silver in the constructed cellar, which is located in Mount Chalpan near the modern village of Polazna . In order not to leave wealth unattended, Yermak chose the “keeper” - a local resident Demidych, who was distinguished for his good health and honesty.

In the XX century, Demidych became a popular folk hero in the Polazna river basin. Today, he is credited with the function of defender of not only the treasure of Yermak, but also the peace and tranquility of the entire area: the village of Polazna , the city of Dobryanka and the village of Demidkovo .
