Content
Biography
From 1868 he studied at the Prague Academy of Arts under the supervision of Professor J. Trenkwald .
In 1873 he participated in the World Exhibition in Vienna , two years later he was appointed director of the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, replacing Jan Swerts .
He made a study trip to Belgium , visited Dresden and Dusseldorf . For some time he lived and worked in Antwerp and Brussels . In the city of Kortrijk ( West Flanders ), together with F. Zhenishek, he created a mural of the city hall depicting the departure of the Flemish army at the Battle of Curtre (1302).
Then he moved to France . After his return to his homeland, he specialized in creating portraits.
A series of paintings by the Count family of Nostitz , work as an artist and educator of children of noble families, allowed him several months of training in Switzerland .
Later, together with M. Ales and F. Zhenishek participated in the artistic decoration of the interior of the building of the National Theater of Prague .
Since 1904 - professor at the Prague Academy of Arts . Among his students are F. Jelinek R. Kremlichka and V. Brunner .
Creativity
Landscape painter , portrait painter , illustrator. The representative of academic painting that meets the public tastes of the second half of the XIX century ( neo-Renaissance ).
He created the altar images of Martin of Tours for churches in Tours and Libeznice , canvases for the chapel of St. Anne in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
Among the book illustrations, the works of F. Schubert , O. Pinkas , encyclopedic publications by J. Otto and others.
