Biography

Andrey Semenov was born on October 14, 1923 in the village of Tverdokhleby (now - Kobelyaksky district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ). After graduating from eight classes of school, he worked on a collective farm. Later he graduated from the courses of machine operators and worked in a machine and tractor station.

In 1943, Semenov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since September of that year - on the fronts of World War II, he was a shooter of the 1st Rifle Company of the 1st Rifle Battalion of the 224th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 72nd Guards Rifle Division of the 7th Guards Army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .

On the night of September 24–25, 1943, Semenov was one of the first to cross the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Borodaevka of the Verkhnedneprovsky District of the Dnepropetrovsk Region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, personally destroying 2 machine guns and 17 German soldiers and officers, another 4 captured [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943 for “courage and heroism shown in crossing the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on its right bank”, the guard, Red Army soldier Andrei Semenov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal under the number 3997 [1] . [2]

During subsequent battles, Semenov received two injuries and a severe shell shock. After the war, he was demobilized. He lived and worked at home. He died on July 14, 1995, was buried in the village of Dashkivka, Kobelyak district, Poltava region of Ukraine [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree [3] and a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Semyonov, his bust was installed in Kobelyaki [1] .
