History

The complex was developed in the Tula Instrument Design Bureau in the 1970s , with the aim of increasing the effectiveness of anti-tank artillery.

Later, KBP conducted an initiative study on the possibility of using the complex for armament of obsolete T-54/55 and T-62 tanks, produced in large numbers in the USSR and allied countries. As a result, it was decided to develop the Bastion and Sheksna tank systems, respectively, for the T-54/55 and T-62. The design of the guided projectile itself (ATGM) practically did not change; the design of the expelling charge changed depending on the device of the cannon chamber . The use of ATGMs allowed to extend the service life of tanks, since their combat effectiveness was almost equal to the tanks of the next generations.

Design

The complex includes:

  • guided projectile ( ATGM ) 9M117 (as part of a unitary artillery shot (cartridge) 3UBK10 ), with laser beam control,
  • also 9Sh135 aiming and pointing equipment , placed on a tripod and designed to detect, select and track a target by an operator , as well as form a control field in a laser beam.

A big plus is that the use of ATGMs did not require replacing tank guns, but only supplemented the range of ammunition used (for example, the use of American ATGM “ Schillela ” required the installation of a specialized launcher and eliminated the firing of standard ammunition).

Modifications

  • 9K116-1 "Bastion" (according to the classification of the United States and NATO AT-10 Stabber) - tank and artillery systems of guided weapons for the T-55
  • 9K116-2 "Sheksna" - a tank system of guided weapons for the T-62
  • 9K116-3 "Fable" - a complex of guided weapons for BMP-3
