Biography
Milbury studied at Colgate University and played as an advocate for the local hockey team. He did not pass the draft , but got into the Boston Bruins system and began playing for their farm club in the AHL Rochester Americans . Milbury also joined the U.S. team at the 1976 Canada Cup .
In the 1975-1976 season, Milbury made his debut in the NHL as part of the Bruins and spent 11 matches in the playoffs. In the next two seasons, he was already the main defender, and the team, led by another future television commentator reached the Stanley Cup finals twice in a row, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens . Milbury completed his playing career in 1987. For the twelve seasons that he spent in the Bruins, the team only once did not reach the playoffs. Milbury was a defensive defender who preferred power hockey. Twice he scored more than 200 penalty minutes per season, six more times - more than a hundred. Milbury was a representative of the Bruins in the National Hockey League Players Association .
After retirement, Milbury worked as a manager for the AHL Maine Mariners team. In 1988, he received a prize for the best coach of the season in the AHL ( Louis Ey-Pier Pier Memorial Award ; along with John Paddock of Hershey Bears). In 1989, Milbury was appointed coach of Boston. He won the Adams Division twice and led the team to the 1990 Stanley Cup final.
In 1994, Milbury began working as a television analyst at ESPN . He returned to club work in 1995 when the New York Islanders hired him as general manager. Milbury held this position until 2006 and several times assumed the duties of head coach. In the first few seasons, the Islanders were among the outsiders of the league. In 2000, the team changed owners, and Milbury got the opportunity to operate on a large budget. However, financial injections did not allow to achieve anything more than three playoffs with a relegation in the first round. Milburyβs work in the Islanders became a talk of the day because of a number of unsuccessful staffing decisions, such as the exchange of Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish , the choice of goalkeeper Rick Dipietro under the first common draft number of 2000 and the acquisition in 2001 Alexei Yashin , for whom the Ottawa Senators received Zdeno Haru and the second general pick draft of 2001 ( Jason Spezza ) and with whom a huge 10-year contract was signed for $ 87.5 million [1] [2] . In 2006, Milbury moved to another position in the holding of team owner Charles Wong .
Since 2007, Milbury has been working as a hockey commentator and analyst. In the 2007-2008 season, he commented on the New England Sports Network , NBC Sports and The Sports Network . Since 2008, he has been working in the NHL on NBC ( NBC channel) and Hockey Night in Canada ( CBC Sports , since 2014 Rogers Communications ) programs.
