Paulo Rocha ( port. Paulo Rocha , December 22, 1935 , Porto - December 29, 2012 , Vila Nova di Gaya ) - Portuguese film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, one of the leaders of the New Portuguese Cinema movement.

Biography
He studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon , in 1959 dropped out and left for France. In 1962 he graduated from the Institute for Higher Cinematographic Studies in Paris with a degree in director-production, and was an assistant to Jean Renoir in the movie The Attached Corporal (1962). He was influenced by Italian neorealism and the French new wave . Returning to his homeland, he worked as an assistant to Manuel de Oliveira on the set of Spring Action ( 1963 ) and Hunt ( 1964 ). In 1963 he showed his first feature film The Early Years , which became one of the manifestos of the new movie. He played in the films of Oliveira ( Francisco , Satin slipper ), Georges Silva Melou, Juan Canizhou and others.
In 1973 - 1974 he headed the Portuguese cinema center. In 1975 - 1983 he served as cultural attache of the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo . For the international project “ Filmmakers of Our Time ” he shot documentaries about Manuel de Oliveira ( 1992 ) and Sokhe Imamur ( 1995 ).
He died in the hospital from the consequences of a stroke .
