Biography
He was born in 1800 in Jerusalem, where he received his education, was tonsured a monk , in 1823 he was ordained a hierodeacon , and in 1828 - a dignitary hieromonk .
In 1833 he was consecrated bishop . He was in the Russian Empire with the goal of raising funds to pay off the debts of the Svyatogrobsky fraternity . He returned to Jerusalem in 1839 and was elevated to the rank of archbishop of Tabor.
On October 19, 1850 he was elected patriarch of Antioch and upon arrival in Damascus received the pulpit in a sad state. Thanks to help from the Russian Empire, he began the restoration of the church system, but the rebellion of 1860 again led church life into decline.
Having received compensation from the Turkish government in the amount of 65 thousand Turkish lira , he began the restoration of the destroyed churches and monasteries and at the end of his patriarchate in the Church of Antioch there were 321 churches, 17 monasteries (including 5 stavropegial), 75 church schools and one theological seminary in Beirut, located in the material care of Metropolitan Gabriel (the number of students - 6 people). Also in Beirut was the only school for Orthodox girls.
The patriarch died on March 25, 1885 in Damascus.
