History
Under the Ming empire, the Zosky guard (左卫) was created in 1409. In 1449, it was combined with the Yunchuan guard (云 川 卫), the name for the combined guard was composed of the names of the original guards - the Zoyunchuan guard (左云 川 卫). Under the Qing Empire, the name was reduced to the Zoyun guard (左云 卫), and in 1725 the guard was transformed into a county.
After the formation of the PRC, the county was included in the province of Chahar . In 1952, the Chahar province was disbanded, and the county was transferred to Shanxi, becoming part of the Yabei Special District (雁北 专区). In 1958, Yuyu County was attached to Zuoyun County. In 1959, the Yobei Special Region and the Xinxian Special Region (忻 县 地区) were merged into the Jinbe Special Region (晋北 专区).
In 1961, the Jinbe Special Region was again divided into the Yabei Special Region and the Xinxian Special Region; the county again became part of the Yabei Special District, while Yuyu County was again allocated from it. In 1970, Yabei Special District was renamed Yabei County (雁北 地区). In 1993, Yabei County was disbanded, and the county became part of the Datong City District.
