History

The county was formed under the Tang Empire. Under the Jin Empire, the Hunyuan (浑源 州) region was created in 1214, and the county structures were disbanded in 1267.

After the Xinhai revolution in China, the administrative structure was reformed, during which the provinces were abolished and the Hunyuan region was transformed into Hunyuan county.

After the formation of the PRC, the county was included in the province of Chahar . In 1952, the Chahar province was disbanded, and the county was transferred to Shanxi, becoming part of the Yabei Special District (雁北 专区). In 1958, Guangling County was annexed to Hunyuan County. In 1959, the Yobei Special Region and the Xinxian Special Region (忻 县 地区) were merged into the Jinbe Special Region (晋北 专区).

In 1960, Guangling and Hunyuan counties were again divided. In 1961, the Jinbe Special Region was again divided into the Yabei Special Region and the Xinxian Special Region; the county again became part of the special district of Yabei. In 1970, Yabei Special District was renamed Yabei County (雁北 地区). In 1993, Yabei County was disbanded, and the county became part of the Datong City District.

Administrative Division

The county is divided into 6 villages and 12 volosts .
